CAÑOS DE MECA
Caños de Meca is well off the beaten track and is a small but unspoiled community on the windswept but stunning Costa de la Luz on the Atlantic coast. It is reached by taking one of the small side roads off the N-340 coastal road near Vejer de la Frontera or by taking the minor road through the pine forest from the port of Barbate.

Deep in the Parque Natural de la Breña y Marismas de Barbate, Canos de Meca has beautiful beaches, backed by cliffs and pine trees. Perched on the cliff-tops straddling the coast road, this sleepy little village is fast waking up to a reputation as a trendy place for beatnik travellers and wave-jumpers to spend the summer.

From the famous Cape Trafalgar direction south-east, the large, magnificent beach with sand dunes is ideal for windsurfing and kite surfing. The beach continues to coves with cliffs, sweet water springs and beautiful rock formations. Behind the beach upon the cliffs is the natural park.

The village of Los Caños de Meca offers various sea front restaurants, bars and small supermarkets. In high season (July and August), due to the large amounts of tourists, temporary beach bars "chiringuitos" are put up along certain stretches of the main beach, offering cold refreshments and snacks during the day.

After the evening meal many visitors descend to the cliff steps to the beach bars to dance on hot summer nights.

Right here at Los Caños is what could probably be called one of the world’s most famous yet paradoxically most unknown places: Cape Trafalgar. It was here that the Battle of Trafalgar was fought in 1805, when Admiral Nelson, outnumbered, defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets and in doing so, lost his life.

Zahora and Mangueta, apart from being the names of the beaches between El Palmar and Cape Trafalgar, are also the names of the residential areas behind these beaches which are closely linked to Caños de Meca.
